ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Marie Reid had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team as the Lady Bulldogs completed the season sweep of Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at the SHM Memorial Center.
NSU (4-19, 1-12 MEAC) kept it close in the first half and was only down 10 going into halftime. Mo'Nique Redhead (Toronto, Ontario) got NSU on the board first when she hit a layup with 19:07 left in the first half.
Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) tied the game 13-all with a 3-pointer at the 11:20 mark, but SCSU (11-13, 8-5) battled back and increased the lead to 12, 39-27, with 32 seconds left in the half. Payne hit a layup on the other end to cut the lead to 10, 39-29, at the break.
The Lady Bulldogs took control of the second half, outscoring the Spartans 44-31 in the final 20 minutes
SCSU shot 47 percent from the field for the game (31-of-66) and 56.7 percent (17-of-30) in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded NSU 56-36 and went to the free-throw line 24 times compared to NSU's nine.
The Spartans connected on 25 of their 75 shots (33.3 percent) and had a season-low 11 turnovers.
Sophilia Hipps and Brittany Baity each had 14 points and six assists for SCSU.
For NSU, Tate had a game- and career-high 24 points, scoring 16 points in the second half. Payne had 11 points and four rebounds, Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) had 10 points and six boards, while Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.) led the defense with eight rebounds.
The Spartans travel to Winston-Salem State for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference matchup on Monday.
