NORFOLK, Va. — Brandi Holley and Allie Garcia each went 2-for-4 to help the Bethune-Cookman softball team complete the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series sweep of Norfolk State on Monday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field. The Lady Wildcats improved to 9-27 overall and 3-0 in MEAC play with the 3-0 win. NSU fell to 6-20, 0-3 MEAC.
Christina Trimble hit an RBI single to center field to get B-CU on the board in the top of the first inning. One inning later, Anush Mooradian scored from third on a throwing error by shortstop Jewel White (Chesapeake, Va.) to put the Lady Wildcats up 2-0.
B-CU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Holley hit an infield single to lead off the inning and got to second on a sacrifice bun by Holly Bussey. Garcia then singled to center field to advance Holley to third and stole second, forcing Spartan catcher Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) to throw to second to try to get her out.
But as soon as Ramsey threw the ball, Holley was on her way home, crossing the plate well before the Spartans could get the ball back to Ramsey.
Garcia pitched a seven-inning, seven-hit shutout and struck out seven batters. Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) tossed her first complete game of the season allowing eight hits, three runs (two earned) and walking one.
White went 2-for-3 for NSU and five other Spartans had at least one hit.
NSU hosts Maryland Eastern Shore in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
