NORFOLK, Va. — The Hampton University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader 10-6, 8-3 from Norfolk State on Thursday night at the NSU Softball Field.

In game 1, NSU (19-23) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first three innings, but Hampton (21-21) scored three runs in the fourth, all with two outs, to take a 4-3 lead.

The Spartans got within one run, 6-5, in the sixth when Senior Night honoree Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) scored on Jeanette Sauceda's(Ontario, Calif.) double to left field and Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) got home safely on Brianeisha Eure's (Virginia Beach, Va.) sacrifice fly.

But the Lady Pirates blew things open in the top of the seventh by scoring four runs, with three coming on a three-run home run by third baseman Sharde Estep. NSU only managed one more run in the bottom of the frame.

Amanda Black (16-13) picked up the win for Hampton after pitching a 10-hit, six-run complete game where she struck out six and walked one. Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) fell to 15-12 with the loss. She gave up eight hits and four runs (one earned) in four innings of work.

The Lady Pirates dominated the start of the second game and capitalized on four Spartan errors. They led 8-1 after the fourth inning. NSU was only able to generate two runs in the sixth with both coming on Danielle Wright's (Safety Harbor, Fla.) two-RBI triple to center field.

Jada Jeffries (3-3) pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) for the win. Pomeroy (1-6) tossed her second complete game of the season in the losing effort. She gave up 11 hits, eight runs, five earned and struck out four.

For Hampton, Tiffany Brents went a combined 5-for-9 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Kelsie Saunders was 4-for-8 with two RBI and a solo homer. In game 2, Black went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs.

The Spartans head to the Tar Heel state this weekend to play a three-game, non-conference series with Winston-Salem State. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday's single game begins at noon.
