NSU Softball Takes Two From N.C. Central

Jeanette Sauceda went 5-for-8 with three runs and an RBI in the doubleheader sweep of N.C. Central.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team swept a pair of games from North Carolina Central at the NSU Softball Field on Thursday afternoon. The Spartans won 7-1 and 7-3 to improve to 8-16 on the season.

In game 1, the Spartans did all their scoring in the second inning. They posted seven runs on four hits and benefited from three Lady Eagle errors. Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.) got things started with a single up the middle that scored Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.). Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on a throwing error by first baseman Michelle Ishida and Ramirez scored on an RBI ground out by Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.).

NSU scored four more in the frame with the last two coming on a two-RBI triple down the left field line by Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.).

N. C. Central (6-28) scored its only run of the game on an RBI single by left fielder Ashanti Stroud in the top of the fifth inning.

Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) picked up her fifth win of the season after pitching seven innings and allowing four hits, one unearned run and striking out five batters. Kristen Schooler gave up 12 hits and seven runs (one earned) in six innings for the loss.

Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Sauceda and Ramsey each went 2-for-4.

In the second game, Jamie Raab (Houston, Texas) drove in two runs with a double to left field in the bottom of the first inning to give the Spartans a fast 2-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles responded with a run in the top of the second, but NSU tacked on three more in the third to extend their lead to 5-1. Both teams scored two more times in the remaining four innings.

Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) pitched seven innings, giving up eight hits and three runs (one earned). She struck out six and walked one. Shamika Chavis-Hodge suffered the loss after allowing seven hits and five unearned runs in two and one-third innings.

For N.C. Central, Stroud went 2-for-4 with two runs and Mae'Risha Watts was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Sauceda was 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Raab went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run.

The Spartans resume conference play at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader against Florida A&M (18-15, 0-0 MEAC).
