NORFOLK, Va. - Two long-time intrastate rivals and former CIAA foes square off this Saturday as NSU hosts Virginia State in the Spartan-Trojan Classic. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Dick Price Stadium.

NSU evened its record at 1-1 on the season with a 23-14 victory over North Carolina A&T last Saturday at Dick Price Stadium in the MEAC opener for both schools. Senior running back DeAngelo Branche (Norfolk, Va. earned NSU MVP honors after rushing 38 times for 170 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Chris Walley (Tallahassee, Fla.) completed 17 of 26 passes for 161 yards and another score, and the Spartan defense did not allow A&T's offense to find the end zone. The Spartans outgained A&T 356-156 in total offense.

Virginia State improved to 2-0 on the season with a 34-21 win over West Virginia State last Saturday
in Ettrick, Va. Junior running back Antwain Lyde ran 20 times for 168 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Jarred Battle completed 10 of 15 passes for 146 yards and three scores
through the air. VSU kicked off its season with a 30-6 win over Livingstone College on Aug. 28.

THE SERIES

• This will be the 48th meeting all-time between the two schools. VSU holds a 26-20-1 edge in the
series.
• This marks the 48th straight season in which the teams will play each other, but the fi rst since 1991
that the teams won't be playing on Labor Day weekend.
• NSU has won four straight in the series by a combined score of 137-38.
• Norfolk State College used to be a part of Virginia State University system. NSC teams were known
as “Little State” and “Baby Trojans” and even wore blue and orange like VSU's teams. When the Norfolk
Division achieved its independence in 1969, the Green Bay Packers were the dominant football
team, leading the school to adopt its current colors, green and gold. In Greek mythology, the Spartans
were a warlike people who were enemies of the Trojans, leading NSU to adopt its current nickname.
