NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped its season opening match to Old Dominion, 6-1, Sunday night at the ODU Tennis Center.
Junior Naaemah Brooks picked up the only win on the evening for the Spartans at the No. 3 singles position, as she defeated Arina Alilueva in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
All three doubles teams fell by 8-0 scores to begin the match. Brooks and senior
Jennifer Astbury came up short against Joanna Dobrowolska and Melissa Esnal Olguin in the No. 1 slot, while sophomore
Rebecca Graff and freshman
Gabriella Jonsson lost to Alihera and Nika Khmolovska at the No. 2 spot.
At No. 3 doubles, senior
Chenge Tsapayi and freshman
Maryna Kariuk dropped their match to Juliana Pires and Diana Ivanova.
Tsapayi gave Ivanova all she could handle at No. 5 singles, but in the end Tsapayi came up on the short end of a 7-5, 6-4 decision. At No. 4 singles, Graff dropped a pair of sets, 6-1, 6-0, to Pires.
Jonsson, at the No. 1 spot, and Astbury, at No. 2, fell by identical 6-0 scores, with Jonsson going up against Dobrowolsha and Astbury facing Esnal.
Kariuk competed at the No. 6 slot, and also lost by 6-0 scores to Khmolosha.
The NSU women will face a trio of opponents next weekend at the VCU 4-1 Invitational, starting with UNC Wilmington at noon on Saturday.
