Spartans Fall to No. 31 VCU, 5-0

RICHMOND, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's tennis team fell to No. 31 Virginia Commonwealth, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the VCU 4-1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

NSU fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss to the host Rams. Each match at the invitational consisted of one doubles match and four singles matches for a total of five points.

Senior Chenge Tsapayi and freshman Maryna Kariuk competed at the No. 2 and 3 singles spots, respectively. Tsapayi fell to Daria Yakavleva at No. 2, and Kariuk dropped her match to Olga Terteac. Both matches were by 6-0, 6-2 scores.

Freshman Gabriella Jonsson came up short against Ana Bara at No. 1 singles, while junior Ashley Foster lost to Manuela Pietzuch at No. 4 singles. Both players were swept by their VCU opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

In the doubles match, senior Jennifer Astbury and junior Naeemah Brooks also lost by a 6-0, 6-0 score to Josefin Hjertquist and Kateryna Yergina.

NSU will head to Washington, D.C., to play Howard Saturday at 11 a.m.
