NORFOLK, Va. - Longtime area rivals Norfolk State and Hampton match up for the 49th time this Saturday in the State Farm Battle of the Bay. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. at Dick Price Stadium.

Both teams are attempting to enhance their positioning in the MEAC standings as the regular season enters its final month. The Spartans won their fourth straight game to improve their record to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in the MEAC with a 38-21 win at Delaware State last week. In doing so, NSU remains in first place in the MEAC, one win ahead of North Carolina A&T (3-2, 2-0), which is the only other unbeaten team in conference play. The Spartans rolled up a season-high 526 yards and 38 points against DSU. NSU jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter and coasted to victory. Quarterback Chris Walley completed 28 of 36 passes for a career-high 327 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score. Running back Takeem Hedgeman ran 15 times for a career-best 132 yards and two touchdowns, and receiver Xavier Boyce got into the act of the record-setting day with personal bests of 10 receptions for 124 yards. Boyce and Victor Hairston caught the TD passes from Walley.

Hampton snapped a two-game losing streak with a 28-23 non-conference victory over Princeton last Saturday at Armstrong Stadium in Hampton. The win makes HU 3-2 overall this year, and the Pirates enter this Saturday with a 1-1 MEAC mark. Quarterback David Legree passed for a career-high 302 yards and two touchdowns – both to Dyrri McCain – to lead the Pirates' attack against Princeton. McCain, a Norfolk native, finished the game with six catches for 123 yards and two scores. Hampton never trailed, but Princeton, down 28-23, had a 1st-and-goal at the Pirates' 9-yard line with less than two minutes remaining. But Hampton forced a turnover on downs to clinch the win.

THE SERIES
• The NSU-Hampton rivalry was dubbed the Battle of the Bay in 1988. The moniker refers to the schools' long history as rivals as well as their close proximity to each other and the surrounding the waterways of Hampton Roads.
• NSU owns a 24-23-1 series edge over Hampton. This will be the teams' 49th meeting.
• The teams have split their last four meetings, with each winning the last two games on its home field.
• Hampton owns an 11-3 series edge over NSU since the Spartans moved to Division I in 1997.

QUICK HITS
• NSU is aiming to match its best start as a Division I program. The Spartans began the 2007 season 6-1 en route to an 8-3 mark and MEAC runner-up fi nish, which still ranks as NSU's best Division I season. NSU would improve to 6-1 with a win over the Pirates.
•The Spartans' next win would also clinch NSU's third straight winning season, which the Spartans have not accomplished since 1994-96.
