Delaware Makes Quick Work of NSU, 7-0

NORFOLK, Va.
– Delaware was too much for the Norfolk State women's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon, as the Blue Hens posted a 7-0 win over the Spartans at the NSU Tennis Courts.

Delaware swept every match to improve to 7-2 on the season, while NSU fell to 2-12 overall.

Starting the match off in doubles, the Blue Hens quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Megan Doran and Samantha Carnall defeated the NSU duo of junior Naeemah Brooks and freshman Gabriella Jonsson, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles.

Dorothy Safron and Montse Ripoll took care of senior Jennifer Astbury and sophomore Rebecca Graff, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, while Ivana Petrich and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom downed senior Chenge Tsapayi and freshman Maryna Kariuk, 8-3, at the third doubles position.

Astbury, Jonsson and Brooks were the first to hit the court in singles as the afternoon wore on. Astbury suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Doran at No. 1 singles, and Jonsson came up short against Safron at the second singles slot, 6-1, 6-2. Carnall defeated Brooks at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

In the lower three singles matches, Petrich earned the win over Tsapayi, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, while Olivia Heim was victorious against Graff at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1. In the sixth slot, Kariuk fell victim to Ripoll, 6-1 6-3, as the Blue Hens completed the sweep.

NSU will be back on its home court Thursday as the Spartans host Chowan at 2 p.m.
