Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood squeezed past the Norfolk State softball team with a 4-3 win in Game 1, and the Lancers then completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap Thursday afternoon at Lancer Field.

Held scoreless for five innings, Longwood finally broke through with four runs in the sixth in the first game of the day to overcome a 3-0 deficit. The Lancers (26-18) shut down NSU in the second game, holding the Spartans (15-19) to just five hits.

A three-run second inning in the opening contest put NSU on the board first. Junior shortstop Gipsy Ramirez walked and junior left fielder Marjorie Pettitt reached on a fielder's choice to put two runners on. A groundout moved the two into scoring position with two outs, and a bunt single by sophomore right fielder Morgan Boyd brought home the first run of the game. Senior center fielder Danielle Wright's two-run double to right-center plated two more runs for the 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Jamie Schulle, meanwhile, gave up just three hits over the first five innings before Longwood broke through in the sixth. Megan Baltzell doubled and Chelsea Sciacca singled with one out. Jordan Cox hit an RBI single for the first run of the inning, and Sciacca came home on the play as well on an error on the Spartans. Two batters later, Courtney Long doubled home two more runs for a 4-3 lead.

Ashley Cornell retired NSU in order in the seventh to hold on for the win.

Schulle (7-9) allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work. Cornell got the victory in relief of Lancer starter Libby Morris, striking out five and giving up four hits in 5.1 scoreless innings.

Brooke Short launched a two-run home run with two outs in the first for an early 2-0 lead in Game 2, and the Lancers added three more in the third on a Kori Nishitomi double and a subsequent two-run homer from Baltzell.

Freshman second baseman Alina Moriarty walked and Wright singled to put runners on the corners with no outs in the fourth, and a double steal allowed Moriarty to cross the plate with NSU's only run of the game. Longwood added two more runs in the fifth on Cox's two-run double and ended the game in the sixth thanks to a two-run single off the bat of Leigh Sexton.

Cornell (10-6) struck out six and gave up five hits and just one earned run in six innings to pick up the win for Longwood. Freshman starter Liz Riley (8-10) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.
