NSU Takes Down Hampton, 6-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Hampton on Friday afternoon at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va.

NSU improved to 1-1 while Hampton dropped to 0-1 on the season.

In the doubles matches, freshman Andrea Macchiavello and sophomore Yvonne Kamegne claimed an 8-2 win over Danielle Butler and Tabita Daolio. Sophomores Laura Gutierrez and Mafalda Lhorca defeated Melanie Scott and Renee Henry, 8-2. In match number three, sophomore Kia Batiste and junior Maryna Kariuk won by default.

In the singles matches, Macchiavello defeated Butler, 6-0, 6-2. Kamegne came away with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Scott in match number two. Lhorca defeated Henry, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles spot. The Spartans only loss came at the No. 3 singles spot where Gutierrez suffered a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 loss to Daolio. Batiste rounded out the singles matches with a win by default.

The Spartans return to action on Feb. 2 to take on N.C. A&T at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va.  The matches begin at 2 p.m.
