Spartans Take on Delaware State on Saturday

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team is looking for its first road win of the season as they travel to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Memorial Hall. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. This is the last road game of the season for NSU.

Last Time Out: NSU suffered an 83-42 loss to the Hampton Lady Pirates on Feb. 18 at the Hampton University Convocation Center. The Spartans have not won against Hampton since defeating the Lady Pirates 70-66 on December 2, 2006.

Hampton shot 50.0 (32-of-64) percent on the night. Olivia Allen led all scorers with 26 points and four rebounds. The Lady Pirates had four other players reach double-figures including Keiara Avant, who finished the night with 23 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Nicole Hamilton had 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Alyssa Bennett also contributed 12 points and four assists on the night.
 
The Spartans finished the game shooting 30.2 (16-of-53) percent from the field. Aivah Parham led NSU with nine points and three rebounds. Rachel Gordon tallied seven points and six rebounds while Ebony Brown added six points, respectively.
 
The Lady Pirates outscored the Spartans in the paint, 38-16, and outscored them 37-9 on points off turnovers. Both NSU and Hampton finished the game with 37 rebounds.

All-Time Series: Delaware State leads the series with NSU, 21-15. The Spartans defeated the Lady Hornets, 61-51, on Feb. 9.

About Delaware State: Delaware State (8-16, 5-6) is coming off of a 69-67 overtime loss against Morgan State on Feb. 18 at Memorial Hall in Dover, Del. The Lady Hornets shot 48.2 (27-of-56) percent from the field on the night while holding MSU to 32.8 (20-of-61) percent shooting. Delaware State had three players reach double-figures, including Tierra Hawkins, who led the Lady Hornets with 30 points and seven rebounds. Deanna Harmon tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Tasia Bristow added 11 points and two steals.

Last Time Against Delaware State: Junior Rachel Gordon posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Norfolk State women's basketball team to a 61-51 victory over Delaware State on Feb. 9 at Joseph Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. The Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak with the win against the Lady Hornets.

NSU finished the game shooting 44.2 (23-of-52) percent from the field. Aside from Gordon, three other Spartans scored in double-figures including senior Recca Trice, who added 12 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five steals. Junior Aivah Parham and senior Batavia Owens tallied 12 points and six rebounds each. This was Owens' third consecutive double-figure scoring game.

Delaware State shot 34.6 (18-of-52) percent on the night. Tasia Bristow led all scorers with 24 points and was the only player to score in double-figures for the Lady Hornets. Tierra Hawkins posted nine points and nine rebounds.

Scoring Leaders: Rachel Gordon leads NSU in scoring averaging 10.8 points per game followed by Aivah Parham, who is averaging 8.5 points per game.

MEAC, NCAA Leaderboard: As a team NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in six different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players also rank in the top 5 in six different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounding at 10.7 boards per game.  Gordon also currently ranks 22nd in the NCAA in rebounding.  Recca Trice is second in the league for assists and is ranked 24th in the nation in assists per games.

Gordon Named MEAC Player of the Week: Junior forward Rachel Gordon earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Feb. 18. This is the third time this season that Gordon has been named Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Gordon tallied 19 points, 12 rebounds and one blocked shot in the 54-51 win against Maryland Eastern Shore on Feb. 11. She shot 53.33 (8-of-15) percent from the field and 75 (3-of-4) percent from the line.

Trice on the Move: Recca Trice's eight assists in the game against Morgan State on Feb. 4 moved her into fourth place all-time in the NSU record book for career assists. Trice has 129 assists on the season and her 461 career assists puts her six away from tying Sharron Tapps for third all-time.

Cracking the top 10: Rachel Gordon's eight rebounds in the game against Coppin State on Jan. 19 moved her into 11th place all-time in the NSU record book for career rebounds. Gordon has 210 rebounds on the season and her 677 career rebounds puts her 34 away from tying Andrea Watts for 10th all-time.
