Delaware Too Much for NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Delaware on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans fell to 7-6 overall while Delaware improved to 7-2 on the season.

In doubles match No. 1, Dorothy Safron and Carmen Lai defeated freshman Andrea Macchiavello and sophomore Mafalda Lhorca, 8-7. Lhorca and Mafalda are 4-3 in doubles play. At the No. 2 spot, sophomores Yvonne Kamegne and Kia Batiste fell to Christina Harrington and Nataliya Naumova, 8-4. Sophomore Laura Gutierrez and junior Maryna Kariuk suffered an 8-4 loss to Danea Jonjic and Kimberly Milla.

NSU continued to struggle in the singles competition. Macchiavello fell to 7-6 overall with a 3-6, 4-6 loss to Jonjic at the No. 1 position. Safron posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kamegne (6-6) in match No. 2. Lai claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win against Gutierrez (6-6) in match three. In match No. 4, Naumova held off Lhorca, 6-3, 7-5. Lhorca is now 8-5 on the season in singles play. Olivia Heim beat Kariuk, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. Senior Rebecca Graff (6-2) rounded out the singles play with a 0-6, 2-6 loss to Harrington.

The Spartans will host Longwood on Friday at the NSU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va. Play begins at 1 p.m.
