WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Logan Powell had a season-high 25 points to lead Norfolk State to a 79-74 victory over Howard on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium.
The win snapped NSU's three game losing streak. NSU improved to 7-6 in the conference and 11-13 overall, while the Lady Bison fell to 6-7 in league play and 10-16 on the season.
The Lady Bison came within four points, 67-63, after Shavonne Duckett drained a 3-pointer at the 2:25 mark, but NSU clinched the victory scoring 10 of its last 12 points at the free throw line to seal the win. For the game, NSU shot 87.1 percent (27-of-31) from the line.
Two other Spartans reached double figures, including junior Rae Corbo, who tallied 16 points. Rachel Gordon added 12 points and 17 rebounds to post her 14th double-double of the season. She tallied 12 of her 17 boards in the first half of the game. She now has 1,015 rebounds for her career and now sits in first place all-time at NSU for career rebounding.
NSU fell behind Howard, 6-2, to start the game. That was Howard's only lead of the game. The Spartans came back with a 23-9 run to take a 25-15 lead over the Lady Bison on a a pair of free throws from Gordon with 7:55 left before halftime.
After over two minutes without a field-goal, Howard finally knocked down a basket as Jasmine Hill drove in the lane with 7:35 to go before the break to make the score 25-17. NSU continued to find success offensively. Freshman Koryn Lawrence scored the last points for the Spartans at the 2:31 mark to send NSU into halftime with a 35-25 lead. NSU shot 34.4 percent (11-of-32) in the first half, including a 60.0 percent (3-of-5) mark from 3-point range. NSU was also perfect from the free throw line in the first half on 10-of-10 shooting. The Spartans are now 10-2 when leading at the half.
Howard started the second half with six unanswered points, which included a 3-pointer from Victoria Gonzalez, to keep the Lady Bison within four with 18:44 left in the game. Freshman Amber Brown made a layup in the paint to spark a 20-13 run for the Spartans. Powell closed out the run on a layup with 9:35 left to give NSU a 55-44 lead over the Lady Bison.
The Spartans still led by double figures at the 5:29 mark as Powell knocked down another shot to make the score 65-52. Powell finished the night shooting 10-of-15 from the field, which included a pair of 3-pointers.
For the game, the Spartans shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (4-of-7) shooting from behind the arc.
NSU will play its final road game of the regular season on Saturday against Hampton. Game time is at 4 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Hampton, Va.
