Spartans Fall to FAMU, 5-2

FLORENCE, S.C. Liza Gordeeva and Andrea Macchiavello each picked up a win in singles play as the Norfolk State women's tennis team fell to Florida A&M, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.

At the No. 1 spot, Gordeeva claimed a 6-1, 5-2 victory over Alexis Dean. Macchiavello competed at the No. 2 position, where she defeated Symone Townsend, 6-2, 6-1.

The Spartans (4-5, 2-3) kept it close in the doubles competition, but could not close out. Macchiavello and Gordeeva led off with an 8-6 loss to Townsend and Elysia Ortiz. Mafalda Lhorca and Krystal Scott suffered an 8-5 loss to Arrice Robinson and Shantal Blackwood. At the No. 3 position, Dean and Dominique Henry posted an 8-5 win against Yvonne Kamegne and Marie Habiyaremye.

NSU fell to FAMU in singles play in position No. 3-6. Blackwood defeated Kamegne, 6-4, 6-2. Lhorca suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Monet Graves. Henry upended Scott, 6-2, 6-2. Habiyaremye closed things out with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Robinson.

The Spartans will face Bethune-Cookman on Monday in the MEAC Southern Division Roundup. The match begins at 10 a.m.
