NORFOLK, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's basketball team (3-11, 2-1 MEAC) looks for a 2-0 road swing against the MEAC's Florida members when the Spartans meet Bethune-Cookman (4-11, 1-2) at 5:30 p.m. Monday night at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Spartans will be seeking to start their MEAC slate 3-1 for the second straight season. NSU, coming off a 68-50 win at Florida A&M on Saturday, is also seeking its first road sweep of FAMU and Bethune-Cookman in the same trip since the 1999-2000 season.

Media Coverage
The game will be broadcast live on WNSB Hot 91.1 FM with Ross Gordon calling the action. Links to NSU's live audio (free) and B-CU's live video coverage (requires payment) are available at the top of the page.

Last Time Out
Sophomore guard Koryn Lawrence scored a career-high 23 points to lead three Norfolk State players in double figures, and the Spartans pulled away in the second half for a 68-50 MEAC victory over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.

Lawrence was an efficient 10-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds for the Spartans, who snapped their six-game losing streak. Senior guard Rae Corbo added 15 points and seven rebounds, and freshman forward Kayla Roberts tallied her third double-double with 14 points and a career-high tying 17 rebounds.

NSU outrebounded FAMU (4-10, 1-1) 54-27 and shot a season-high 44 percent from the floor en route to its largest-ever margin of victory over the Rattlers. It was just NSU's second-ever road win at FAMU and first since the 1999-2000 season. The 18-point margin of victory bested NSU's 17-point win (72-55) in the 2013 MEAC Tournament as the program's most lopsided over FAMU.

NSU used runs of 15-0 and 9-2 in the second half to pull away in a contest that was tied at 28-all at the half.

Season Highs
In addition to Lawrence's career highs, NSU also posted season highs as a team in Saturday's win over Florida A&M in a number of categories:
  • NSU shot a season-best 44 percent from the floor and held FAMU to 29 percent shooting, worst by an NSU opponent this season.
  • The Spartans had a season-high 54 rebounds, and their +27 rebound margin is their largest of the season.
  • NSU also had season highs in assists (18) and field goals made (26).

Lawrence Back in a Big Way
Sophomore guard Koryn Lawrence missed eight of NSU's first 11 games of the season, including five in a row leading up to the game at USC Upstate on Jan. 3. Lawrence has come up big since her return, averaging 13 points per game in the last three games. Aside from a two-point performance in last week's loss to Coppin State, Lawrence has been outstanding, scoring 14 points on perfect shooting (4-of-4 field goals, 6-of-6 free throws) at USC Upstate and a career-high 23 points (10-of-13 field goals, 3-of-3 free throws) at FAMU. The 5-6 guard also has 16 rebounds in the last three games, including a career-best eight at FAMU.

Scouting B-CU
Malia Tate-DeFreitas scored a game-high 20 points to lead Hampton to a 61-54 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, the Wildcats' sixth loss in their last seven games.

Emily Williams had 13 points, Terrenisha Hollis 12 and Jasmine Knowles 11 for B-CU in the loss to Hampton. B-CU shot 39 percent from the floor and had 16 turnovers.

Kendra Cooper scores a team-best 12.7 points per game for the Wildcats. Kayla Crawford averages 9.9 and Hollis 8.9. B-CU is second in the MEAC with 74 3-pointers made (4.9 per game).

Series vs. B-CU
The Spartans are 14-13 all-time against the Wildcats and have won three straight in the series. B-CU's last win was an 83-73 win at Moore Gym on Feb. 25, 2012, coincidentally the teams' last meeting in Daytona Beach.

Up Next
The Spartans return home for a pair of MEAC games against their North Carolina counterparts starting next Saturday when North Carolina Central comes to Echols Hall for a 4 p.m. matchup.
