Coppin State Edges NSU 58-56

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State guard Genesis Lucas scored the go-ahead points on two free throws with 56 seconds left, and Norfolk State guard Rae Corbo missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the final buzzer as CSU escaped Echols Hall with a 58-56 win over the Spartans on Monday night.

Lucas was one of three Coppin State players in double figures. She finished with 12 points off the bench. Jordan Swails led CSU (2-10, 1-0) with 16 points and Omaah Tayong chipped in with 11 as the Eagles beat NSU (2-11, 1-1) for the 18th straight time. Corbo paced the Spartans with 14 points.

NSU held its largest lead of the game at 52-47 after a traditional three-point play by senior guard Jazamine Gray with 5:38 left to play. The Eagles answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a layup and 3-pointer by Swails, to claim a 54-52 advantage with 4:29 remaining.

The Spartans tied it on their next possession on a free-throw line jumper by junior guard Brehanna Daniels with 3:36 left. Swails again put CSU back in front 50 seconds later with another jumper, but Corbo tied the game for the sixth and final time at 56-all on two free throws with 1:16 remaining.

Lucas broke the final tie by going 2-of-2 from the foul line with 56 seconds left. With another chance to tie or take the lead, Corbo had the ball stolen from her by CSU forward Janell Lane with 39 seconds to play. With a chance to seal the game, Lane missed a jumper with 13 seconds on the clock. NSU pushed the ball up the floor, but could only manage a hurried 3-pointer by Corbo from the right wing. Her shot hit off the side of the rim as the final horn sounded.

Both teams started slowly. CSU outscored NSU 11-2 over the first six and a half minutes of the game as the Spartans missed their first 15 shots from the floor. NSU scored its first four points of the game from the free-throw line, but stayed close early as the Eagles missed 13 of their first 16 field goals. By the time Nia Roberts ended NSU's field goal drought with a jumper, the CSU lead was just 11-6 with 12 minutes left in the first half.

Later in the half, Corbo capped an 11-4 Spartan run with her first points of the game, a 3-pointer, to give NSU a 21-20 lead. But four points by Tanaysa Henderson and a 3-pointer from Lucas helped CSU forge back into the lead, 27-23, heading into halftime.

NSU trailed by as many as eight points early in the second half, but slowly rallied. Corbo scored five straight points, then forward Ronesia Spicer chipped in with four points off the bench on a strong post move and then two foul shots to help the Spartans chip away at their deficit. NSU took its first lead of the second half at 43-42 after back-to-back layups by Corbo, the second of which came off a fast-break opportunity with 9:05 remaining.

Gray then took over, scoring or assisting on nine straight NSU points. She hit two free throws, assisted on two Kayla Roberts baskets, then converted her three-point play to push the Spartans' lead to five with 5:38 left.

It wouldn't be enough, though, as Lucas and Swails led CSU's late charge that sent the Spartans to their sixth straight loss.

Both teams struggled from the floor. NSU shot 29.4 percent (20-of-68) and CSU hit on 32.8 percent (20-of-61). CSU made 3-of-10 from beyond the arc and NSU 2-of-10, while the Eagles also outscored NSU by a slim 15-14 edge from the charity stripe to account for the narrow margin.

Corbo, the MEAC's leading scorer, was held to 4-of-15 shooting from the floor. She did still manage 14 points and four assists. Gray had one of her better games as a Spartan, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying seven assists. Spicer chipped in with a career-high eight points and four rebounds off the bench, while Nia Roberts finished with seven points and eight rebounds. The Spartans grabbed 21 offensive rebounds, leading to their 49-40 overall edge on the boards.

Swails had seven rebounds in addition to her 16 points for CSU. Tayong finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three of her team's six blocked shots. Lucas (four) and Swails (three) combined for seven of the Eagles' 12 steals.

The Spartans hit the road for their next two games, starting with a 4 p.m. matchup at Florida A&M on Saturday.
