Last Time OutCoppin State guard Genesis Lucas scored the go-ahead points on two free throws with 56 seconds left, and NSU guard
Rae Corbo missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the final buzzer as CSU escaped with a 58-56 win over the Spartans on Monday night.
Lucas was one of three Coppin State players in double figures. She finished with 12 points off the bench. Jordan Swails led CSU (2-10, 1-0) with 16 points as the Eagles beat NSU (2-11, 1-1) for the 18th straight time. Corbo paced the Spartans with 14 points.
NSU held its largest lead of the game at 52-47 after a traditional three-point play by senior guard
Jazamine Gray with 5:38 left to play. The Eagles answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a layup and 3-pointer by Swails, to claim a 54-52 advantage with 4:29 remaining.
The Spartans tied it on their next possession on a jumper by junior guard
Brehanna Daniels with 3:36 left. Swails again put CSU back in front 50 seconds later with another jumper, but Corbo tied the game for the sixth time at 56-all on two free throws with 1:16 remaining.
Lucas broke the final tie by going 2-of-2 from the foul line with 56 seconds left. With another chance to tie or take the lead, Corbo had the ball stolen from her by CSU forward Janell Lane with 39 seconds to play. With a chance to seal the game, Lane missed a jumper with 13 seconds on the clock. NSU pushed the ball up the floor, but could only manage a hurried 3-pointer by Corbo from the right wing. Her shot hit off the side of the rim as the final horn sounded.
Scouting FAMUThe Rattlers are 4-9 on the year after dropping their first two games in the new year, 79-58 at Kennesaw State on Jan. 2 and 61-47 at Mercer on Jan. 4. The Rattlers have dropped five of their last six games overall since their 55-50 win over South Carolina State in FAMU's MEAC-opener on Dec. 6. That is the only MEAC game FAMU has played to date.
Four FAMU players averaged at least 9.0 points per game, led by Olivia Antilla (12.2) and Khaderja Young (10.4). Kenya Dixon averages 10.0 and All-MEAC preseason third-team selection Taneka Rubin averages 9.1. The Rattlers were picked to finish sixth in the MEAC this year.
All-Time Series vs. FAMUFAMU holds a 21-5 all-time series edge over the Spartans. The Rattlers have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams, with NSU's only win being a 72-55 win in the 2013 MEAC Tournament first round. FAMU won the only meeting last year, 83-62 in Norfolk on Dec. 5, 2013.
Stat Sheet StufferSenior guard
Jazamine Gray has been one of the team's most consistent contributors and has shown the ability to affect games in a number of ways. In Monday's loss to Coppin State, Gray had eight points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying seven assists, at last flirting with what would have been the school's first triple-double since 1996. Gray leads the team and is sixth in the MEAC in assists (3.5) and, despite being the team's shortest player at 5-4, is fourth on the team in rebounds (4.3).
