FLORENCE, S.C. – Several close matches fell in favor of Bethune-Cookman as the defending regular season champion Wildcats defeated the Norfolk State women's tennis team, 5-2, on Monday morning at the MEAC Southern Division Round-Up at the Florence Tennis Center.
Bethune-Cookman easily won the doubles point thanks to sweeps at the first and third positions. NSU earned victories at the No. 4 and 6 singles slots, while the Wildcats won three tightly contested matches at the top of the lineup for the victory.
B-CU improved to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Junior
Andrea Macchiavello earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the fourth singles slot over Maria Garoz-Mareno, while senior
Mafalda Lhorca defeated Alejandra Vidal at the sixth position, 6-1 and 6-1.
Senior
Yvonne Kamegne came up just short against Maria Sablina at the No. 3 position, 7-5 and 6-4. Also at the top of the lineup, freshman
Dajana Cvjetkovic dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Mina Matsuba, while sophomore
Liza Gordeeva lost by a 6-3, 6-4 score to Chinatsu Kajiwara at the second slot.
The Wildcats also picked up the victory at No. 5 singles when Gaby Chinchilla downed senior
Krystal Scott, 6-3 and 6-0.
Bethune-Cookman won No. 1 and 3 doubles by 8-0 scores, with Matsuba and Sablina winning at the top spot against Cvjetkovic and Gordeeva, and Kajiwara and Vidal downing Scott and Kamegne at the third slot.
Macchiavello and Lhorca trailed Chinchilla and Garoz-Mareno 5-4 at the second position before the match was called.
The Spartans are next scheduled to host Albany at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
