VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The pairing of Norfolk State men's tennis sophomores
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel ran the table en route to the doubles title at the Virginia Beach Clay Court Championship held this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Cape Henry Racquet Club.
Da Silva and Guevel did not drop a set across four doubles matches on Friday. After cruising to a 4-0, 4-1 victory in the opening match, the pair dispatched the grouping of Hampton's Charles Hudson and Luke Thompson 4-2, 4-2.
The semifinal featured another Battle of the Bay matchup as Da Silva and Guevel defeated the Pirates' Peter Odegbami and Fedor Shirin 4-2, 5-3 to reach the championship, where they defeated Southern Virginia's Paul Monson and Ben Spencer 4-2, 4-1.
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu won two doubles matches on Friday before bowing out in the semifinal. The Spartan duo opened the day with a 4-1, 4-1 victory before defeating Clark Cummings and William Driskill of Hampden-Sydney 4-2, 4-2.
In the semifinals, Alcaraz and Dumitrascu split the first two sets with Monson and Spencer 4-5, 4-0 but fell 4-2 in the decisive third set.
Norfolk State placed two in the semifinals of the singles draw, but neither could advance to the championship match.
Da Silva won three singles matches before he was ousted by eventual champion Salman Bader. The sophomore from Aracaju, Brazil dispatched Basil Post of Hampton 4-1, 4-2 in the opening round before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 4-2, 4-0 victory over Driskill.
That quarterfinal matchup was an intra-squad affair, as Da Silva defeated fellow Spartan
Agustin Carrizo 4-1, 4-0.
Da Silva pushed Bader in the first set of their semifinal match before falling 5-3. Bader then took the second set 4-2 to reach the championship match.
Alcaraz also reached the semifinals, where he was forced to retire in the second set against Matthew Foster-Estwick of Hampton.
Alcaraz won his opener 4-1, 4-2 before beating Monson 4-0, 4-2. In the quarterfinals, the sophomore from Pachuca, Mexico defeated Sultan Kenes of Virginia State 5-4, 4-2.
In the semifinals, Alcaraz dropped the first set 5-3 before retiring.
Carrizo won two matches in the singles bracket. The sophomore took his opening match 4-2, 4-1 before surviving a tough battle with Fernando Fernandes of Hampton – winning 5-4, 5-3.
Likewise, Dumitrascu won twice to advance to the quarterfinals. The Bistrita, Romania native defeated Jonathan Fuchs of Virginia State 4-2, 4-0 then moved past Thompson with a 4-1, 4-0 victory.
Guevel won his opening match 4-0, 4-2 over Spencer before falling to Bader 4-0, 4-2.
The Norfolk State men's tennis team concludes the fall portion of its schedule on Nov. 11 with the 757 Doubles Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.
