NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State could not parlay the doubles point into a victory on Thursday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Longwood at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (2-4) made short work of doubles competition, grabbing back-to-back victories to clinch the point early.
On the third court,
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu downed Marc Casanovas and Guillermo Cagigas – 6-1.
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel then handed Julian Farthing and Raisei Sakai a 6-3 defeat on the second court.
The top-flight doubles match went unfinished.
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo trailed Amadeo Blasco and Guilherme Sergio, 5-2, when doubles play concluded.
Two-set victories on the first four courts propelled the Lancers (6-3) to the win.
At No. 2-seeded singles, Sergio defeated Alcaraz by a 6-2, 6-2 score before a 7-5, 6-0 victory by Cagigas over Fernandez.
Blasco defeated Da Silva on the first court – 6-4, 7-5 – to pull LU to within one point of victory. Sakai then quickly wrapped up the match with a 6-3, 6-2 result over Dumitrascu.
The two unfinished matches had identical scorelines. On the fifth court, Carrizo trailed Farthing 4-6, 1-0. Guevel trailed Naydenov by the same margin in the sixth-seeded flight.
Norfolk State hosts South Carolina State, its MEAC Tournament semifinal opponent in each of the past two seasons, on Friday at 2 p.m.
