ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State men's tennis dropped its second match in as many days, falling 4-2 to Appalachian State on Thursday night in Orlando, Florida.
The Mountaineers (4-9) swept through doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. Alex Brea and Campbell Stone downed
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu, 6-4, on the third court to kick off the match before a 7-5 victory by Zion Heaven and Afonso Viana over
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel at second-seeded doubles.
The doubles match between
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo and Milo Bargeron and Alex Pavkovich was knotted at 6-6 when the doubles point was clinched.
The Spartans (1-3) took the first two singles flights for a 2-1 lead. On the first court, Da Silva downed Bargeron – 6-1, 6-4. Alcaraz then recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Pavkovich.
Appalachian State tied the score at 2-2 when Fernandez retired from his third-seeded flight against Viana. The Mountaineers then claimed wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to seal the win.
Blake Carter defeated Guevel by a 6-1, 7-5 margin on the sixth court before Heaven's 6-2, 6-4 match-clinching win over Dumitrascu in the fourth-seeded flight.
Carrizo's match at No. 5 singles went unfinished. Carrizo dropped the first set to Stone, 6-3, and trailed 5-2 in the second when the match concluded.
The Spartans conclude their Florida trip with a rivalry match against Hampton on Friday.
