NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team competed at the Christopher Newport University Invite this past weekend, the first of three events slated for their fall schedule.
After dropping their quarterfinal match in Group A doubles, seniors
Vini Da Silva and
Andres Alcaraz defeated (8-3) Harrison Hunter and Alec Strause of CNU to make it to the consolation finals. Da Silva and Alcaraz ended up falling in the final to another pair from CNU, in a tightly contested 8-7 (7) tiebreak loss.
Seniors
Agustin Carrizo and
Ignacio Guevel also competed in the Group A doubles, dropping a pair of matches to North Carolina Wesleyan and one match to CNU.
All four players that made up both doubles pairings for the Spartans competed in singles as well, going for a combined 8-0 in the singles groups. Da Silva went 2-0 in group A singles, defeating Roberto Puig of NCWC (6-1, 6-4) and Dominic Lacombe of CNU (6-4, 6-2). Alacaraz also went 2-0 in group A, defeating Davy Van Geerke of Hampton University (6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (7)) and Aditya Iyer of NCWC (7-5, 0-2) in a match that was cut short due to the weather.
Carrizo defeated both of his opponents competing in group B singles, winning against Roman Elmore of Hampton (6-4, 6-3) and Juan Vallejo on NCWC (6-3, 6-4). Guevel went 2-0 in group C singles, winning against Alec Strause of CNU (7-5, 6-3) and Bently Goodwin of CNU (6-2, 6-4)

"It was a great start to the season. I'm proud of our guys making it to three final matches and going undefeated in singles, representing Norfolk State and the Spartan brand of tennis very well. We are eager to keep it going next weekend at the Virginia State Invitational," said head coach

The teams this upcoming weekend accompanying the host, Virginia State, will be North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Howard , Longwood , Norfolk State and North Carolina Central.
