CLINTON, S.C. – Jaiden Tweed hit a two-run home run with no outs in the bottom of the sixth to give Presbyterian a 3-1 win over the Norfolk State softball team on Saturday afternoon at the PC Softball Complex.
The Spartans fell in their season opener at the Blue Hose Invitational despite tying the score in the bottom half of the sixth. The Blue Hose (2-1) left numerous runners on base throughout the game before ending it all on Tweed's two-run shot.
NSU's
Skylar Swain took the loss after allowing all three runs on nine hits with five innings of work. Presbyterian stranded 10 runners for the afternoon. The Spartans left eight runners on base.
NSU was also set to play games against Robert Morris and South Carolina State on Saturday, but weather forced their cancellations after it also forced a delay in the bottom half of the first.
The Spartans got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the first after an hour and a half delay, but Presbyterian loaded the bases again in the fourth and this time the Blue Hose got on the board. A sac fly with no outs made it 1-0. Swain was able to get out of any more trouble despite issuing another walk in the inning.
The Spartans tied it up in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Mia Holmes pinch ran after a walk was issued to start the inning, and she went to second on a wild pitch. Two outs later, sophomore
Lily Potter delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to left to make it 1-1.
Presbyterian led off the bottom of the sixth with a single before Tweed's shot to left field.
For the Blue Hose, Jenna Greene (2-0) struck out 11 and walked seven while giving up two hits and one earned run. Tweed finished 3-for-3.
NSU will play two more games on Sunday, against Robert Morris and S.C. State.
