HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team fell to the Berry College Vikings 5-2, in the first match of the Spring Tennis Fest Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Spartans started the day well, taking the first point by winning the first two double matches. The Spartans' no. 1 doubles team of
Zoe Fraser and
Bruna Goncalves defeated the Vikings' Kathryn Barker and Keileen Cullen 8-2, while the no. 2 pair of
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields also won 8-2 against Sakura Manning and Allison Ivey.
In the no. 1 singles,
Paula Fortuno won 6-0, 6-4 against Berry's Ivey. The rest of the Vikings would rally to take the match, with tight contests in the 2-4 spots. Berry's Barker topped the Spartans no. 2 Fraser (6-4, 4-6, 8-10), while NSU's no. 3 Goncalves fell to Van Rengen (6-4, 2-6, 10-12). Fields also fell in a close 6-3, 4-6, 8-10 match in the no. 4 spot.
Siliah Burke was at the no. 5 spot for NSU, falling to Berry's Anna Skowronski 6-0, 6-1.
The Norfolk State women's tennis team continues the Spring Tennis Fest Tournament on Tuesday, with a 6 p.m. match against Savannah State University.
