Norfolk, Va. – NSU and Drexel narrowly beat out a rainstorm at NSU Tennis Complex, with the Dragons defeating the Spartans 4-1 shortly before precipitation began to fall on Wednesday.
Drexel got off to a dominant start, winning all three doubles matches to take the opening point.
Zada McMorris and
Andrea Barcenas lost 6-2 at the No. 2 position, while
Breana Cook and
Laura Ruiz fell by the same score at No. 3.
The Dragons even took down the Spartans' top doubles pair,
Amber Fuller and
Aleksandra Evdokimova, 6-3. Fuller and Evdokimova had played a trio matches together prior to Wednesday, winning all three.
Barcenas tied things up for the Spartans shortly after the doubles point wrapped up. Barcenas led 3-1 in the first set of her No. 3 singles match against Drexel's Mya Fuentes, before Fuentes retired due to injury.

Breana Cook battled through a long first set at the No. 4 slot, ultimately falling to Drexel's Aida Garcia Mendez 6-3, 6-0. Dragons junior Cristina Corte Gonzalez took down
Niya Grant 6-0, 6-0 on Court 5.
Fuller, fresh off her victory at the No. 1 singles position on Saturday against Coppin State, faced a tough opponent in Drexel's Lorie Lemongo at the top of the lineup Wednesday. Lemongo, who made the ITA Super Regional Sweet 16 in the fall, defeated Fuller 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the contest for the Dragons.
Evdokimova and McMorris didn't finish their matches on Courts 2 and 6, respectively. Evdokimova won the first set against Drexel's Isabel Cabrerizo 6-2, and trailed 3-2 in the second. Play stopped with McMorris on the brink of forcing a third set against Pauline Kharkover, the match going unfinished at 6-4, 3-5.
The Spartans hit the road for a road matchup with Elon on Friday.
