WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Norfolk State softball team were defeated by the top seeded Howard University Bison 29-8 on the road for the beginning of their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Series this Saturday at the Nats Youth Academy Stadium.
Due to inclement weather, the Spartans (4-40, 3-16 MEAC) only played one of the two intended games on Saturday against the league-leading Bison (30-11, 14-5 MEAC) with the second game being moved to Sunday instead.
Behind home runs by
Loren Hudson and
Maya Johnson the Spartans secured their first multi-home run game of the season. This home run was the first of Johnson's career.
Johnson's home run came in the bottom of the second for a three-run score and Hudson's came in the fifth on a solo shot.
Kearney secured both a single and a double in the bottom of the second for the Spartans.. Her two-RBI double vaulted the Spartans to a 6-4 lead over the Bison in an inning that saw the six runs on four hits.
The Spartans were unable to stop the Bison after they scored 29 runs on 15 hits across five innings.
Hudson, Kearney, and Johnson along with
Rylie Gilbreath,
Maddy Morris, and
TC Watson each secured hits totaling seven.
Coming up - Weather moves game two of the double header series from Saturday to Sunday at 3 p.m. The regularly scheduled game at 12 p.m. is still on as intended.
