Box Score 2 WASHINGTON D.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team started the MEAC Tennis Roundup with two victories, taking down Morgan State 4-3 and Coppin State 7-0 on Friday.
The Spartans (9-7, 2-0 MEAC) lost the opening doubles point against Morgan State, but fought back with a tremendous showing in singles play.
Sofiya Tsitavets and
Ines Sabadie earned Norfolk State's lone doubles victory, taking down Morgan State's Aleksandra Evdokimova and Marta Serra Carles 6-4 at the No. 3 position.
Yuliya Yurkova evened the score 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Hannah Smith at the No. 2 position.
Caroline Nicholls climbed back from an early deficit, taking down Julia Jeffrey 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Court 3 to push NSU in front.
Tsitavets gave Norfolk State a 3-1 lead with another thrilling win at the top position, defeating Lauryn Hall 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Carles got Morgan State back on track with a win by retirement on Court 4, but
Irina Iurea clinched the match for NSU with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Roua Linem at the No. 5 position.
Norfolk State swept doubles play against Coppin State. Yurkova and Nicholls won 6-3 on Court 1, Tsitavets and Sabadie won 6-2 on Court 2, and
Sara Gonzalez and
Irina Iurea won 6-0 on Court 3.
Yurkova bested Sky Carter 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 position to open singles play, before
Irina Iurea defeated Kyla Procter 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 slot. Sabadie crushed Megan Etienne 6-1, 6-0 on Court 3, clinching the dual match victory for the Spartans.
Nicholls earned her second come-from-behind triumph of the day, taking down Brandy Babcock-Hannah 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the top spot in the lineup.
Sabina Iurea defeated Abigail Perue 6-1, 6-2 on Court 5, before Gonzalez closed the evening with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alison Azarak at the No. 6 position.
