Spartans Explode for 37 in Fourth Quarter, Roll Past Delaware State 77-45

NORFOLK STATE --- The Norfolk State women's basketball team erupted for 37 points in the fourth quarter and pulled away from Delaware State for a 77-45 victory Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.
 
Norfolk State improved to 13-12 overall and 8-2 in MEAC play, while Delaware State fell to 4-21 (1-9 MEAC).
 
Jasha Clinton led the Spartans with 17 points and added seven steals, five rebounds, and four assists. Cire Worley and Da'Brya Clark each scored 14 points, while Niyah Gaston chipped in 12.
 
Delaware State jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Norfolk State cut the deficit to 9-7 on a Jenesis Hill layup. The Hornets pushed the advantage to 10 with an 8-0 run late in the first quarter, but the Spartans answered with a 7-0 run of their own to close the period, capped by a Clinton layup, trimming the margin to three.
 
Clark opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game, and Anjanae Richardson followed with a free throw to give Norfolk State the lead. Back-to-back layups by Carmen Kweti and Richardson pushed the Spartans' lead to 25-21 with 1:57 remaining in the half. Norfolk State carried a 28-24 advantage into halftime after Clinton knocked down three free throws.
 
Delaware State tied the game to start the second half, but Worley answered with a layup to restore the lead. After the Hornets closed within one at 32-31, Norfolk State closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run over the final five minutes to take a 40-31 lead into the fourth.
 
Worley ignited the final quarter by scoring the first nine points, extending the Spartans' lead to 49-31. Delaware State scored on a pair of layups before Clark drilled a 3-pointer with 7:06 remaining. Norfolk State followed with an 8-0 run, then closed the game on a dominant 17-2 stretch that featured five 3-pointers to seal the win.
