NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State baseball team rolled past Coppin State in a 21-2 victory on Thursday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Norfolk State improved to 12-16 overall and 9-5 in Northeast Conference play, while Coppin State fell to 4-21 (4-10 NEC). Parker Hampton (3-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits over four innings with two strikeouts. Nyenati Snoh followed with three shutout innings in relief, holding Coppin State hitless.
Jaydan Israel powered the Spartans offensively, going 3-for-3 with six RBIs, including a three-run home run. Justin Journette finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run, while Mason Mompoint added two hits and four RBIs. Brendan Burke went 3-for-3 with four runs scored, and Hunter Gillespie recorded two hits and two RBIs.
Norfolk State wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for eight runs in the first inning. Israel capped the frame with a three-run homer to right field, giving the Spartans a commanding early lead.
Coppin State answered with single runs in the second and third innings, but Norfolk State continued to build its advantage. Journette launched a solo home run in the second, marking his 50th career home run, while Mompoint followed with a solo shot later in the inning to extend the lead to 11-1.
The Spartans added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Israel and tacked on one more in the fourth with an RBI single from Kydese Queen. Norfolk State broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs on just three hits while capitalizing on walks and hit-by-pitches. Israel delivered a two-run double in the inning, and the Spartans pushed the lead to 20-2.
Norfolk State closed out the game behind strong relief pitching from Snoh, who retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the run-rule victory.
Norfolk State closes its series against Coppin State at Marty L. Miller Field on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
