Wilson Appleton enters his second season at Norfolk State in 2026 as the Spartans' safeties coach and his first as defensive pass game coordinator.

Appleton joined Norfolk State after two seasons as a defensive analyst at UAB. In 2023, the Blazers recorded 21 takeaways and tied for seventh nationally with 11 fumble recoveries. The following season, UAB ranked 17th nationally in passing defense, allowing just 180.3 yards per game while holding opposing quarterbacks to a 54.7 percent completion rate. Appleton also contributed to recruiting operations, assisting with the organization and coordination of the program's recruiting contact strategy.

Before UAB, Appleton began his coaching career at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tenn., under former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer. He was a member of the staff that won the 2021 TSSAA Division II-AA State Championship, finishing the season 12-1.

A native of Alabama, Appleton began his collegiate career as a quarterback at Auburn University, where he earned SEC academic honors and his bachelor's degree. He later transferred to Benedict College as a graduate student and earned his Master of Business Administration.
