Wilson Appleton enters his second season at Norfolk State in 2026, continuing a rapidly rising coaching career after joining the Spartans' staff in 2025.

Appleton began his playing career as a preferred walk-on quarterback at Auburn, where he earned SEC-Academic All-American honors, before transferring to Benedict College, an HBCU program in Columbia, S.C.

Appleton's coaching career has been closely tied to NFL great Trent Dilfer. He got his start as an assistant on Dilfer's staff at Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.) before following him to UAB, where he spent two seasons as a defensive analyst, organizing the program's recruiting contact plan and helping optimize in-game adjustments. His move to Norfolk State marked his first departure from Dilfer's staff.
