NSU Goes 1-1 on Day 2 of WSSU Tourney

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Norfolk State volleyball went 1-1 on the last day of the 7th Annual Winston-Salem State Lady Rams' Volleyball Invitational defeating Savannah State 3-0 (30-19, 32-30, 30-15) and falling to Hampton 3-1 (31-29, 27-30, 30-24, 30-28) on Saturday at the C.E. Gaines Center.

Against Savannah State, Yolanda Roberts (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Shardonay Blueford (Chesapeake, Va.) each had 10 kills and Roberts had 12 digs for her first double-double of the day. Heather Quinn (Conyers, Ga.) hit .438 with 8 kills and Chantel Cherry (Portsmouth, Va.) had 14 digs to go along with her nine digs.

Donna Jenkins had 18 kills and two solo blocks for Savannah State, while Kari Parker added 11 kills and two service aces.

In the match against Hampton, Ebonie Vincent's 30 kills, coupled with Ese Ighedosa's 22 led the Lady Pirates past the Spartans in four games. The win put Hampton in the championship game against eventual tournament champion North Carolina Central.

Roberts and Blueford both recorded double-doubles in kills and digs against the Tigers. Roberts had 14 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the day, while Blueford contributed 10 of each. Cherry and Vanessa Faircloth (Lumberton, N.C.) also had double-digit kills of 12 and 10 respectively.

NSU is now 3-14 on the season.

The Spartans are off until Friday when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to participate in the Maryland Eastern Shore Tournament.
