Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton closed out regulation play with an 8-1 run, the Pirates scored the next seven points in overtime to help send the Norfolk State men's basketball team to a 79-73 loss on Saturday night at Joseph Echols Hall.
A sellout crowd for the Battle of the Bay saw a tight first half followed by a back-and-forth second with second place in the MEAC on the line. NSU had momentum going into the half, but the Pirates responded and held the lead for a good portion of the second half.
NSU seized control in the latter stages of regulation, but the Pirates used a 15-1 run covering the end of the second half and the beginning of overtime to pull out the win.
Hampton improved to 14-11 overall and 9-3 in MEAC play, while the Spartans fell to 14-11, 8-3.
NSU had a seven-point lead early in the first half, but neither team could get any more than a four-point lead the rest of the stanza. The Spartans went into intermission up by two, but an 11-0 run by the Pirates put HU into the lead, 49-40 with 12:36 to go.
Down 54-47 after a pair of HU free throws, NSU seemed headed for the win thanks to a six-minute, 18-4 run. A trio of 3-pointers from the Spartans helped spark the run, and Williams capped it with a pair of free throws for a 65-58 lead with 2:55 left.
After junior
Jamel Fuentes went 1-of-2 from the foul line with 54 seconds left for a two-point lead, the Spartans never had the ball for the rest of regulation as a tip-in by Du'Vaughn Maxwell with 31 seconds left tied it up. Maxwell got fouled on the play and missed the free throw, but HU corralled the offensive rebound. A last-second 3-pointer and tip-in fell short for the Pirates.
After HU went ahead by seven in overtime, NSU got no closer than four points.
Senior
Pendarvis Williams led all scorers with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior
Brandon Goode added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 10 rebounds and tied his career high with six blocks.
Fuentes totaled 15 points, five assists and four rebounds, and senior
Riley Maye also reached double figures with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Dwight Meikle led HU with 14 points.

RaShid Gaston had a fastbreak slam to help NSU take a 12-5 lead to start the game. The Pirates responded with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes, and a pair of free throws a little later from Emmanuel Okoroba gave HU its first lead of the game, 20-18, with 6:56 left in the half.
Hampton went up by four twice, its largest lead of the first stanza, before the Spartans answered with a pair of layups from Fuentes and Maye in the last minute of the half.
NSU went into the break ahead 35-33 thanks to 11 points from Fuentes and nine from Goode.
For the game, the Spartans hit 24-of-63 (38.1 percent) after shooting 48 percent in the first half. HU connected on 24-of-58 (41.4 percent).
The Spartans also hit 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) from 3-point range.
It marked the first overtime game between NSU and Hampton since 2004-05.
NSU will head to Coppin State next Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
