Spartans Sweep Hornets for 1st MEAC Win

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State volleyball team earned its first conference victory of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Delaware State at Joseph Echols Hall.

Senior Angie Darcus hit a career-high .484 and finished with 18 kills to lead a Spartan attack that hit a season-best .321 for the day. NSU earned the victory by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-21.

The victory improved its record to 1-4 in the MEAC and 2-16 overall. DSU dropped to 2-17 overall and 0-5 in league play.

The Spartans hit better than .400 in each of the first two sets in winning by comfortable margins. The Hornets cut the NSU lead to just one late in the third set before the Spartans finished the sweep. DSU hit .068 for the match and had just 22 kills compared to 41 for NSU.

NSU was up by a 6-4 score in the first set after a kill by senior setter Darcy Moore. The two teams traded points, and DSU called timeout down 14-10 after a kill from Darcus. Up by two a little later, the Spartans began to pull away, and Darcus added three kills during a 9-3 closing run.

Junior Alex Irizarry had a pair of service aces during a 7-0 spurt for the Spartans early in the second set. That gave NSU a six-point lead, and runs of 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 later on extended the advantage to as much as 14.  Moore added a pair of service aces, and Darcus had four kills during what ended up being an extended 12-2 run in the middle of the set.

The Spartans hit .407 in the first stanza and .409 in the second.

Darcus had seven kills in the last set, although the Spartans started off in a 5-2 hole. After calling timeout, NSU scored six straight, with sophomore Clarke Tyler adding two kills and a block. The Hornets were able to tie it up at 10-10, but Norfolk State scored eight of the next 10 points to build what seemed like a comfortable six-point lead.

DSU did not go quietly, with NSU finally calling timeout after a 7-2 Hornet run made it 20-19. They got to within one a short time later, but Darcus tallied four kills during the last seven serves to put a stamp on the win.

Norfolk State had more service aces (8-3) and digs (31-20) than DSU. Junior Dominique Parker added eight kills for the Spartans with two blocks, while Moore finished with 34 assists and four kills. Senior Janay Frazier led all players with eight digs.

NSU will travel to Baltimore to take on Coppin State next Friday.
