Spartans Win 2nd Straight with 3-0 Victory over Delaware State

Box Score DOVER, Del. – The Norfolk State volleyball team had one of its best offensive showing in years, and the Spartans earned their second straight win with a 3-0 victory over Delaware State on Wednesday night at Memorial Hall.

In the second-to-last match of the season, the Spartans hit .430 with just five attack errors. It marked the best hitting percentage by NSU since setting the Division I record with a .435 clip on Sept. 2, 2008 against Virginia State. The team's five attack errors on Wednesday are also believed to be the fewest in a match in the D-I era for NSU.

Seniors Angie Darcus and Janay Frazier and sophomore Clarke Tyler provided plenty of offense for the Spartans, who won 25-17, 25-22 and 25-14 to finish the season sweep of the Hornets. Darcus hit .409 with 11 kills and eight digs, while Frazier and Tyler each added 10 kills. Tyler hit an even .500 in the match, while Frazier finished with a .421 attack percentage.

The victory improved NSU's record to 3-8 in the MEAC and 4-20 overall. It gave the Spartans their first win streak since the end of the 2013 season after also defeating Hampton last Sunday.

Tyler and Darcus each posted four blocks to help Norfolk State tally a 9-2 advantage for the contest. The Spartans limited Delaware State to a .143 attack percentage with 22 attack errors.

Frazier got going early on when NSU won four of the first five points of the match. The Spartans were up by one until they went on a 5-1 run, including four kills from Darcus, for a 12-7 lead in that first set. Then after the Hornets cut the deficit to two, the Spartans won seven straight for a commanding nine-point lead. Tyler added two more kills late in the set as NSU won by eight.

The Hornets, though, were up by a 6-3 score in the second before Tyler's service ace tied it up at 7-7. NSU called its first timeout of the set when DSU was on its way to a four-point lead. Both teams then took turns going on runs, first NSU when they won six straight for a 17-15 lead. Frazier had two service aces, and Darcus added two blocks to put the Spartans up by two.

Delaware State erased a three-point NSU lead a little later by winning four straight, going up by a 22-21 margin. That was as close as DSU would get to a win, as a kill by sophomore Hope Forsythe and three blocks by the Spartans over the last four serves gave the Spartans the three-point win heading into the break.

NSU wasted little time jumping ahead in the third set, winning eight of the first 10 points to force a DSU timeout. The Spartans slowly stretched the lead to eight, 14-6, getting kills by four different players over that time. Frazier and Darcus each had two more kills later in the set, and one last attack error on Delaware State finished off the 11-point third-set victory.

Frazier needed just five swings to tally five kills in that last set.

Senior Darcy Moore led NSU with 32 assists and eight digs. Junior Dominique Parker also added five kills on 11 swings without an error.

Delaware State was led by its top hitter, Jasmine Jackson, who added match highs of 14 kills and 14 digs.

The Spartans close out the season on Friday with an 8:30 p.m. matchup at UMES.
