NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team will look for its first win of the season when the Spartans hit the road for matches at James Madison on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Richmond on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Playing shorthanded in Florida during spring break, Norfolk State dropped all three matches to begin the season 0-3. However,
Ignacio Guevel and
Agustin Carrizo will make their college debuts this weekend, which allows the Spartans to compete with a full team for the first time in 2017.
Andres Alcaraz and
Vini Da Silva each had a hand in five victories for the team during the spring break trip. Da Silva went 2-1 in singles action and Alcaraz added a singles victory, while the two combined to go 2-1 at the No. 1 doubles position for Norfolk State for the week.
James Madison (6-6) has won three of its last four matches, including a 5-2 victory over Hofstra on Tuesday. The Dukes will host fellow Colonial Athletic Association member Delaware on Friday and Duquese on Saturday morning before the Spartans and James Madison meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.
Norfolk State will conclude its road-trip on Sunday at Richmond (13-2), which has won 12 consecutive matches, including a two-match sweep at The Citadel on March 11. Richmond defeated the Bulldogs 7-0 in the first match, before taking the second match 6-1. The Spiders will travel to St. Joseph's on Friday and hosting Monmouth on Sunday morning, prior to facing the Spartans.
