ELON, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team fell 7-0 in its season opener at Elon on Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead in the match by earning a convincing doubles victory, winning 6-0 on both Courts 2 and 3.
Elon won 6-0, 6-0 on Court 6 to take a 2-0 lead, before Lizette Redding took down Allesia State 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot to increase the gap to three.

Sabina-Maria Iurea 6-4, 6-0 for the clinching point in the match, before Mariana Reding finished out a 6-1, 6-4 win over
Laura Ruiz.
The only Spartan to win her respective opening set,
Irana-Iona Iurea put together a strong fight against Elon's Miray Konar at the No. 3 position. The Phoenix junior came from behind, however, to earn a 5-7, 6-1, 10-3 win.
After dropping the first set,
Gabriela Davidescu battled back to win the second set 6-4 at the No. 1 slot. Elon's Tanik Sibel narrowly avoided defeat during a tight third set tiebreak, winning the match 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.
Norfolk State returns to the court on Feb. 23 against Temple in Philadelphia, Penn.
