NSU Set for Matches Against Maryland Eastern Shore and Delaware State

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State volleyball team is set for a pair of weekend matchups, beginning with a home contest against Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, Oct. 31, before traveling to Delaware State on Sunday, Nov. 2.
 
NSU looks to take both matches after falling to UMES in five sets and DSU in straight sets earlier this season.
 
Tickets
For the first time in program history, Norfolk State is selling tickets for home volleyball matches, marking another step in the growth of Spartan Athletics.
 
Tickets cost five dollars, while NSU students receive free admission with a valid university-issued ID. Fans can purchase tickets at nsuspartantickets.universitytickets.com or by calling the NSU Ticket Office at 757-823-9009.
 
About Norfolk State
The Spartans enter the weekend with a 2-20 record, along with a 1-8 record in the MEAC, following a four-set win against Morgan State on Friday, Oct. 24, and a three-set loss to Coppin State on Sunday, Oct. 26.
 
Junior outside hitter Gabrielle Gilbert leads NSU with 281 kills and a .200 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Jasmine Mataira has dished out 187 assists. At the service line, Gilbert (29), Briana Ellis (20), Mya Wood (18), and Mary Nahinu (14) have provided consistent production.
 
On defense, Nahinu leads the team in digs with 192, followed by Wood with 172. Ava Berry paces the Spartans at the net with 61 blocks, while Reagan Chisholm (45) and Gilbert (35) add support.
 
Record Watch
Gilbert ranks third in career kills at NSU with 986. She trails Jessica Johnson (2012-14, '16) in second with 1,002 kills. Charlotte Armstead (2009-12) holds the program record with 1,177. Gilbert also ranks third in career attacks with 2,628 after surpassing Yolanda Roberts (2005-08) with 2,533 career attacks.
 
About Maryland Eastern Shore
Maryland Eastern Shore enters Friday's match 8-14 on the season with a 5-4 record in the MEAC. The Hawks split their two games last weekend, defeating South Carolina State in a five-set thriller before falling in straight sets to North Carolina Central.
 
Junior outside hitter Karielys Melendez leads the Hawks with 157 kills. Nkemjika Ikemefuna has added 154 kills, while Lilliana Montes has added 144. Setter Jayda Hutchins directs the offense with 333 assists, while Kate Eden adds 234 assists. At the service line, Hutchins (32), Melendez (31), and Eden (23) pace the team.
 
Defensively, Valeria Matias leads UMES with 335 digs, followed by Melendez (171) and Hutchins (142). Anjola Omolewa leads the Hawks at the net with 55 blocks, followed by Montes (54) and Malaysia Shaw (42).
 
About Delaware State
Delaware State enters the weekend 9-14 on the season with a 5-4 record in the MEAC. The Hornets picked up a pair of wins last weekend, first a three-set sweep over North Carolina Central, followed by a five-set victory against South Carolina State.
 
Senior outside hitter Gerren Tomilin leads the Hornets with 260 kills. Junior outside hitter Emma Patmon and Aaliyah Mitchell follow with 169 kills each. Setter Naz Tuncay paces the offense with 110 assists, followed by Ailena Mykins (10). Patmon also leads the team in service aces with 21, followed by Tomilin with 20.
 
Tomilin anchors the DSU defense with 155 digs, followed by Patmon (132) and Landyn Langham (100). At the net, Kelsie Dawson leads the Hornets with 54 blocks, while Mitchell (49) and Hannah Sanders (46) follow.
