NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State volleyball team earned its second straight win on Friday night, sweeping South Carolina State 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 at Gill Gymnasium.
NSU improved to 4-22 (2-10 MEAC), while SCSU fell to 5-20 (1-11 MEAC).
Gabrielle Gilbert led the Spartans with 15 kills, and
Reagan Chisholm added 10.
Jasmine Mataira directed the offense with 35 assists, while
Mary Nahinu paced the defense with 14 digs.
South Carolina State opened the match with a 6-3 lead, but Norfolk State responded with a 7-3 run, capped off by Gilbert's kill at 10-9, giving the Spartans their first lead of the night. NSU used a 9-4 run late to pull ahead 24-20, then closed the set 25-22.
In the second set, Nahinu's ace helped NSU take a 6-3 advantage. Gilbert later extended the lead to four, but SCSU trimmed the gap to 15-14. The Spartans regained control, pushing ahead by six at 21-15 and taking the set 25-18.
Norfolk State carried the momentum into the third set, highlighted by back-to-back aces from
Paula Sigurani to go up 10-4. A
Briana Ellis ace pushed the lead to seven midway through the set. Chisholm sealed the match with a kill, as NSU closed on a 7-3 run to win the final set 25-16.
Norfolk State returns to action Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. at Gill Gymnasium against North Carolina Central.
