NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team dropped two games on day one of the Battle at the Bay, falling 4-3 to Maine and 5-1 to Stony Brook.
The Spartans move to 3-3 overall and return to action Saturday against Quinnipiac and St. Francis.
GAME 1 – Maine 4, Norfolk State 3
Norfolk State struck first in the opening inning as
Maddy Morris singled to center field to bring home
Qween Edmonds for the early lead.
The Spartans maintained control through the middle innings. Edmonds crossed the plate again in the third when
Bristyl Riddick singled through the left side, extending the advantage to 2-0.
NSU pitching held Maine scoreless through five innings before Riddick launched a solo home run over the left-field wall in the fifth to make it 3-0.
With just three outs remaining, Maine rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs, including a solo homer, to take a 4-3 lead.
Norfolk State put the tying run on base in the bottom half, but the Black Bears turned a game-ending double play to secure the comeback victory.
GAME 2 – Stony Brook 5, Norfolk State 1
Stony Brook opened the scoring in the second inning using a single and sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead, then added another run in the fifth to push the margin to 3-0.
The Spartans broke through in the sixth when
Aniyah Michalak doubled to left field, scoring Edmonds, her third run of the day, to avoid the shutout.
The Seawolves responded with two insurance runs in the seventh and closed out the game with three quick outs to secure the 5-1 win.

Norfolk State returns to the field Saturday, Feb. 21, for day two of the Battle at the Bay. Quinnipiac and Stony Brook play at noon, followed by Spartan matchups against Quinnipiac (2 p.m.) and St. Francis (4 p.m.).
