Dr. Melody Webb Named MEAC Guardian of the Game Honoree

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb has been selected as a recipient of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Guardians of the Game Award, the conference announced.

Dr. Webb will be honored at the MEAC Foundation Sneaker Ball on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center.

The Guardians of the Game Award is a distinguished recognition celebrating individuals who have made a lasting impact on the world of sports through leadership, service, and commitment to excellence.

Dr. Webb joins a prestigious group of honorees in the second class of women selected as Guardians of the Game, including Adeanah Pooler (SWAC), Alisha Tucker (Hampton University), Felicia Martin (NCAA), and Neema Conner (MEAC).

"The Guardians of the Game Awards is a powerful way to shine a light on the often-overlooked individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to advance their athletic departments without seeking recognition," said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. "Each honoree has left a remarkable legacy through their commitment to excellence. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and honored to host an event that recognizes and appreciates all they have accomplished."

Dr. Webb, the first woman to lead Norfolk State Athletics, has guided the department through a period of unprecedented success since her appointment on July 1, 2020. Under her leadership, the Spartans have captured 23 MEAC championships, including a conference-record six titles during the 2024–25 season.

Her tenure has been marked by success across multiple programs, with both the men's and women's basketball teams earning multiple MEAC titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, while the cross country and track & field programs have sustained their championship standard. Norfolk State has also elevated its national profile by hosting four NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships from 2023–26, including the Division I Championship in 2025.

Beyond competition, Dr. Webb has strategically elevated the Norfolk State brand, highlighted by the hiring of head football coach Michael Vick and increased national exposure on platforms such as ESPN's First Take, Good Morning America, BET, and Nike's Yardrunners campaign. The department has also participated in premier HBCU showcases, including the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and Circle City Classic, while expanding its reach through international competition.

A visionary leader, Dr. Webb has overseen more than $5 million in facility upgrades, strengthened partnerships, and enhanced community and alumni engagement. Academically, Norfolk State student-athletes have achieved the department's highest GPA and a 79 percent Graduation Success Rate, supported by initiatives such as the CLEAR Leadership Academy and expanded student-athlete development programming.
