NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State women's track and field team opened the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a strong performance Thursday at William "Dick" Price Stadium.

The Spartans sit in fifth place with six points after the opening day of competition. North Carolina Central leads the meet with 23 points, while Morgan State holds second place with 20 points.

Abigael Chebet earned Norfolk State's lone medal of the day, taking silver in the 10,000 meters with a time of 38:22.77.
Amira Dailey placed fifth in 43:12.98, while
Moamiky Kenneh finished sixth in 43:14.72.

Payton Drumwright advanced to Saturday's finals in the 400-meter hurdles after placing seventh in 1:01.96.
Autumn Burrell also qualified for the 200-meter finals, clocking a time of 24.50 to place seventh in the preliminaries.

Norfolk State added points in the field events, led by
Kaena Riley, who placed sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 37.44 meters.
Amanti Mayes followed in seventh with a toss of 36.71 meters.
Essence Shaw contributed another point for the Spartans, placing eighth in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters.

Shaw also sits in second place in the women's heptathlon with 2,901 points after the first day of competition.

Competition resumes Friday with the conclusion of the women's heptathlon beginning at 9 a.m.
