NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track and field team earned three medals Thursday on the opening day of the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at William "Dick" Price Stadium.

The Spartans sit in fourth place with 11 points after the first day of competition. Delaware State leads the meet with 18 points, while Howard holds second place with 14 points.

Daniel Mathenge paced Norfolk State's distance squad with a second-place finish in the 10,000 meters, clocking a time of 30:25.16.
Ian Kimutai followed closely in third at 30:25.69, while
Lewis Too took fourth (31:28.59).
Mathew Kipkoech rounded out the Spartan finishers, placing seventh in 32:41.78.

Norfolk State advanced three runners to Saturday's 200-meter finals.
Christopher Basking won his preliminary heat with a personal-best time of 20.95.
Kendrick Winfield finished second in 21.06, while
Julian Ward took sixth in 21.29.

Kristopher Stephens led the Spartans in the field events with a silver medal in the high jump after clearing 2.03 meters. Chancelor Watson added points with a seventh-place finish at 1.95 meters.
Jayshaun Campbell also scored for Norfolk State, placing eighth in the discus throw with a mark of 41.90 meters.

Chazden Wilson sits in sixth place in the decathlon with 2,972 points after the opening day.

Competition resumes Friday at 9:15 a.m. with the continuation of the men's decathlon.
